PROGRAMS: Schools & Support

In the summer of 2008, The Ssubi Foundation constructed a new school for Lily kindergarten and Primary School in Kampala, Uganda.

Another school constructed in record time- six weeks. The Ssubi Foundation and a dedicated team of workers tore down existing dilapidated structures and replaced them with five new classrooms, a staff room, a headmistress office, and a block of new toilets. The result is a stunning improvement to the neighborhood and to improving the conditions for 150 school aged children.

The Lily Kindergarten and Primary School was almost closed due to the unsanitary nature of the toilets, this would have been a terrible loss to the local community and students attending the school many of them subsidized by the school and could otherwise not afford an education. While construction took place the school children attended a temporary school in a small opening about two blocks from the site- allowing the students and teachers to come and check the progress daily. Dusman and Phil remained on site for the construction period and were assisted this year by Canadian volunteers, a special thank you to Shaun Crawford and Margot and Rick Theriault for joining on site and lending a hand.

The opening ceremony and official handed over of the highly anticipated new school was something to remember. The Namarembi Cathedral Boys Brigade Marching Band and the Bishop of Namarembi lead a march through the community to the school while people lined the streets to cheer and wave to the school children and team of Ssubi personal and workers who constructed the school.

Although the headmistress, parish members and education officials spoke of the new school and how it would change the lives of so many children they also stressed we remember it is a first step in achieving a higher educational standard in Uganda. They encouraged the community, teachers and students to use the inspiration generated by receiving a new school to work hard and challenge them-selves to make Lily Kindergarten and Primary School a school that achieves a high level of academic excellence.
