PROGRAMS: Schools & Support

In the summer of 2007, Philip Ndugga (The Ssubi Foundation Director) and Dusman Okee (Operations Director in Uganda for The Ssubi Foundation) worked with local authorities and members of the Palenga Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp to form a working cooperative that built the first concrete school structure in the area in the last 10 years.

Not only were they able to achieve this "miracle" but they did it in a record time of three weeks. Their dedication and hard work paid off as the newly built school was presented to the Palenga community on August 11, 2007.

Several hundred school-aged children, both those that attend and those who do not attend school, members of the local educational communities and political personnel, came together with Canadian Directors of The Ssubi Foundation to cut the ribbon that would officially dedicate and open the school, providing hope to many of the local children. The video at the beginning of this website was read during the opening ceremony by Okello (a student of the school) and shows the emotion experienced during the opening ceremony.

As many of the children who will use the new school can appreciate, taking lessons outside during the rainy season is difficult. This building will allow more children to receive the benefits of a formal education and with this learning, help to eradicate poverty.
