PROGRAMS: Schools & Support

In the summer of 2010, The Ssubi Foundation constructed new teacher quarters and renovated classrooms and a library for Palenga Primary School in Gulu, Uganda.

The Ssubi Foundation and a dedicated team of workers constructed and renovated five teacher accommodations, including private shower, and latrine for each unit. In addition, each unit was furnished with solar lights. One of the issue's facing the education system in Gulu District is a lack of teacher housing, resulting in absenteeism due to teachers commuting long distances and also resulting as a deterrent for attracting higher quality teachers.

In addition, the Foundation renovated five classrooms and converted a classroom block into a library. The library was fully furnished with book shelves, bench's and tables and included full set of local primary text books and readers and science equipment.

The highlight of out time in Uganda was a soccer and netball game between Palenga and Lela Obaro Primary Schools. Uniforms, balls, medals and transportation were provided by The Ssubi Foundation but the kids brought determination, spirit and energy. We started with netball, where Palegna (wearing yellow) dominated the field and won 20 to 11. The most exciting part was when the home team scored as the cheers were deafening. After the netball match, everyone rushed to the football pitch for the impending match. Here Lela Obaro redeemed them selves with a 2-1 win over Palenga. Actually Lela Obaro was very strong but the Palenga goal keeper held them to 2. He was named man of the match. This was the first interschool match for either school this year and student attendance as high. Next year Lela Obaro will host the matches.
